Yesterday I went to Hing Won and decided to try their Minced Meat in Soybean Sauce Noodle 炸醬麵, I was alittle hesitant at first cos some places just serves them nasty, however they didn't let me down and it was actually yummy or was I too hungry ... hahaha!Friday, 4 January 2008

NYC - Midtown - Shanghai Mong Fusion Chinese Restaurant
After a disappointing and unsatisfying first try of jjajangmyeon at Hyo Dang Gak last week, I went in search of a restaurant that serves it better and came upon Shanghai Mong at K-town yesterday. They claim to be a Fusion Chinese Restaurant but they do serve Korean dishes.
Love the décor, very the ‘Old Shanghai’, gives you the comfy and cozy feeling. The menu consists of both Chinese-American and Korean food, the food pictures inside looked so good that I wanted to order almost everything … heh heh. But since my game plan was to try the jjajangmyeon, I stuck to it and got that.
The wait staffs were nice and pleasant, service was super fast, I made my order and prepped my camera to take pictures of my food, within minutes I had the bowl of hot jjajangmyeon - $5.95 (yellow wheat noodles topped with black bean gravy with potatoes, onions, some other vegetables and meat) and banchan (appetizers) in front of me … WOW! That was super fast!
The jjajangmyeon was simply delicious; it was so tasty, sooooooooooo good. The banchan which had the takuan (yellow pickles), kimchi and szechuan vegetable were nice too. Prices are definitely reasonable; I would definitely be back again soon cos I am already craving for more as I am writing this, better finish up before I drown the lappy with my drool
… heh heh heh.

NYC - Midtown - Hyo Dong Gak
I had jjajangmyeon 炸醬麵 - Noodles with Seafood Brown Sauce - $7.95 while Catie ordered the Noodles with Chicken & Seafood soup - $6.95, we shared a Fried Dumpling (8 pieces) - $5.95. The portions were big and as you can see the pricing very reasonable.
They have 2 different kind of menu, one consists of the regular Chinese-American dishes and the other will have Korean dishes, you would have to ask them for that. I was quite disappointed that they didn’t give us banchan which are the appetizers other Korean restaurants usually serves. Half way through our meal, I then realized that other patrons had some small dishes of kimchi and takuan (yellow pickles) so I asked the waited, ‘Do you have appetizers?’, he said ‘Yea’ and came back with an empty bowl with a pair of chopsticks … *faintz*
The jjajangmyeon 炸醬麵 was ok, it looked good but had not much taste so I added a lot of hot pepper powder for the added spiciness which made it tastier. Catie wrote in her Yelp review that her noodle soup was good. The fried dumplings were however disappointing, even though the dish presentation was very nice, the meat filling had no taste at all, thank goodness for the sauce. At least now I know how jjajangmyeon 炸醬麵 tastes like … heh heh

NYC - Chinatown - Hong Kong Station
After the facial, I was feeling hungry so I walked around to see what's good and end up at Hong Kong Station which is a Chinese 'Fast-Food' eatery where you choose your own noodles @$1.50 per portion and add on toppings which had a wide selection of beef, pork, fishballs, vegetables and many others @$1 each portion, you'll definitely be spoiled for choice cos I was for sure, I wanted every item but if I did then I would have needed a wheelbarrow to take me out ... hahaha.

Here's what I had in my bowl:
Noodle - Thick Noodle aka Mee Pok $1.50
Ingredients:
Beef Stew - $1
Beef Tripe - $1
Beef Balls -$1
Mushroom - $1
Vegetables - $1
Seasonings:
Garlic Sauce
Parsley & Scallion
Along with the bowl of noodle, I also had a taro bubble tea which was $3 so my meal came up to $9.50 which is within my budget of $10 ... hee hee. Apart from noodles, they have toasts, sandwiches, desserts and wide selection of drinks.

I have bypassed this eatery many many times but never made an attempt even to try but after this 1st try, I am sure I will be back more often as it was super yummy especially the soup which was very tasty, my mouth is watering now as I type. The places is clean and neat, I saw a lady going around cleaning and cleaning, wondering if she ever stops to rest. I had a little language problem with the server, she spoke in Cantonese and I had a hard time telling her what I wanted, good thing she got a co-worker who spoke English to attend to me so that was cool, overall the staff were friendly and nice. Can't wait to take some of my friends there.

NYC - Momofuku and Restaurant Forte Baden Baden NY
and also shopping (she finally got her shoes today … YAY!).Today we had our meals at Momofuku Noodle Bar (she’s been there before but it was my first time) in the East Village for lunch and Baden Baden in Koreantown for dinner. In between our long walks in the city from Union Square @14 st to Koreantown @32 st, we had a mini tea-break at Union Square Park. We were also in Trader Joe’s for abit and sampled really nice snacks and juices … hee hee.
At Momofuku Noodle Bar, we shared Steam buns with Berkshire Pork for appetizer and Tsukemen which is dipping broth, chilled noodles, shredded Berkshire Pork and poached egg. It was really crowded but we managed to get seats. The restaurant is very small, everyone sits at the counter overlooking the open concept kitchen. We like the Berkshire Pork alot, very nice taste, so delicious. One of the chefs was nice to pose for us to take a picture of him, he is so cute!

During our tea-break at Union Square Park, we shared banana / pumpkin breads and drank Trader Joe’s Unsweetened Green Tea which was very refreshing.
Along our walk, I saw a signboard that says Diet Lite Ice-Cream and went to check it out, end up getting the No Sugar Strawberry Ice Cream and bought some lottery (a girl’s gotta try her luck yea?!) … heh heh.

For dinner, we proceeded to Restaurant Forte Baden Baden NY in Koreantown. It is not easy to spot them as they are on the 2nd floor and the main sign says BBNY and not Baden Baden … grrrrrrrrrrrrr, good thing I remembered to bring the address along and managed to find them … heh heh. The restaurant is like a pub restaurant with dim lightings and loud music, there was a decent crowd and was very very noisy. It did get more crowded eventually and alot of people actually liked sitting at the bar counter. We even saw guys eating the fried chicken with chopsticks! C'mon it should be time to get our hands dirty and oily! We had the large size Baden Baden Chicken which is Fried Chicken and also onion rings. Embedded below are some vegetables like chopped onions, green & red peppers, right in the middle were some really yummy roasted garlic. The chicken skin was very crispy and tasty, some parts of the chicken was quite dry. Along with our meal, we shared a cool and refreshing beer … GULP, GULP, GULP … BURP!

My Cooking - My imaginary Mee Siam ... hee hee

After making this spicy noodle soup, I realised it looks like mee siam, maybe cos of the egg too lah ... hahaha. It was just tom yum paste as the soup base, noodles, enoki mushroom, lots of spring onions and the hard-boiled egg.
