It's been like almost 2.5 years since I left New York City to return to Singapore, many have happened and passed but the only thing that hasn't changed much is my love to take food pics which I have not posted here at all. Recently I made a trip to NYC and too have loads of pics of food which I shared with my wonderful friends who took time to meet up and shared meals with me.

I seriously need an inspiration to start blogging again!!! Soon enough ... I know I know, I've said that like thousands of times! LOL!!!

2009 - Singapore - Back ...

First of all, I would like to apologise for my long absence ... umm ... especially to my fans (if I have any at all! ... LOL). Was going thru a series of life-changing issues and also moving back to Singapore from New York City to be with my mom and family. Yes, I am still taking pictures of the wonderful and yummy food I have been eating in Singapore but not liking the weight gain ... ARGH! ... Hee! hee! Slowly I all sort them out and post them out to share with you.

Today is the big day for 2009 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, I am not sharing pics of food but a picture of Singa the official Singapore courtesy lion in his cool F1 outfit.

I wanted a small healthy snack before going to work so I decided to go to Pret A Manger to check out what they had, I didn't want any sandwiches nor pastries and I spotted the Hummus Skinny Dip which turned out to be really good! So yum and healthy!

The Hungarian Mushroom soup was yummy and addictive! Sandwiches fresh.

Service was great, counter staff very friendly and always smiling. :o)

My family in Singapore loves using McCormick Beef Stew seasoning mix and always gets me to send some since they have stopped selling them over there. It is really a very tasty seasoning, I use it myself occasionally with beef cubes and even chicken.

Haven't been to many Sbarro, this location is right smack in the middle of 5th Avenue, next to Rockefeller Center so lots of tourists will drop in for a quick bite. Food is not bad, prices and service are ok. Had the spaghetti & meatballs and they tasted pretty good. :o)

Thanksgiving for last year was simple, we had chicken instead of turkey so no gobble gobble. The sides were mashed potatoes, vegetables - carrots and green beans, stuffing and bisquits.

Was in the mood for some congee so I decided to try this Chinese eatery along Canal Street name Canal Seafood Restaurant (Formerly known as 266 Canal Fun Corp). I ordered the Century egg and Lean Pork congee (皮蛋瘦肉粥) and on the side an order of Char Siew (叉燒) & Roast Pig (火肉). The location is great and easily spotted, the inside is big with lots of seating area however the congee was kinda disappointing as it was too watery, the char siew & roast pig was tasty but very pricey so I doubt I will be back again.Canal Seafood Restaurant

Had the POP burger with cheese, consisted of 2 mini burgers ($7) which was decent, love the french fries which were tasty and crispy ($3.75), also had a soda ($1.75) with my order, a little pricey but it was a good experience. Cute interior where the walls are lined with pictures of Campbell Soup Cans which is a great idea!

NYC - Chelsea - Blood Manor - New York City's Premier Haunted Attraction

Last night (10/29/08) 7 of us thrill seekers(Ahmed (my hubby), Anthony, Yulisa, Cintia, Lucy, Rob (Lucy's hubby) & myself) had absolute fun at the Blood Manor, it was wasn't scary but the props and robotic ghouls were cool, not forgetting the actors/actresses (you rock!).

We had gotten tickets online but yet had to get in the long line, we got there around 7pm (they open at 7.30pm), we were in line for about over an hour before we finally got into the building where we had to go up many flights of stairs, we all had to be in a single file cos the place was very narrow. They had actors all dressed up as ghouls going up and down the line scaring people which was really fun especially when you hear people screaming and getting all scared even before they went into the building. Our group had fun joking around and lots of laughter so the wait wasn't that 'painful', wished that it wasn't a chilly night though.

The tour was about 20 minutes in the many rooms inside, before we were let in, we were told the rules and regulations, the usual no photography or what so ever and that the we are not supposed to touch the props nor the actors and vice versa though we were warned the actors will come up close to us, be in our faces or breathe down our necks, etc. So off we went in a single file which meant I couldn't grab on to my hubby and walk with my eyes closed as what I had planned before. LOL!

The rooms had various themes, e.g. slaughterhouse where chopped up human limbs were on tables (pigs were being hung in that room!), Freddy Kruger was in another room (he was all up in my face which got me all giggly and when I said 'I luv you', he said 'Oh yea?' then he started flicking his tongue up and down ... hahaha), a dining room where they had a big fat guy and his chums having their 'human' delicacies, a barbershop where the ghoul was working on a woman head ... yes, just her head, an operating room where the doctor was 'cutting' up her 'patient, a bar where they had a sexy 'pole-dancer', etc. There were guys running around with chainsaws, robotic and also human ghouls jumping out from doors and windows. Last of all, we love the 3D room where we were given special glasses to view and that was really cool, there's also a clown chasing us ... hee hee!

Overall we had a fabulous time, maybe cos we didn't go in with very high expectations thus we totally enjoyed the whole experience.

Ha ha, I know I know, you must be wondering 'Whoa! Gen, don't you get tired of Chipotle?' ... well, I have to say 'No' and you Chipotle fans knows how addictive it can be ... hahaha! Anyway, since Halloween is right around the corner meaning next Friday October 31, they have a 'BOO RITO' special on that day, all you have to do is dress up as a Chipotle burrito, taco, bowl or salad and you get a FREE BURRITO between 6pm to closing time. Have fun!!!! I am going to get my flu shots on that day so it'll probably be a BOO HOO HOO day for me ... heh heh.

For my birthday this year, the hubby took me to Jekyll & Hyde Pub in Greenwich Village. We really like this place for the 'eerie' and 'horrific' ambiance ... heh heh. The decor consists of skeletons, werewolves, mad scientists, sphinx, gargoyles, etc. The head decors on the walls actually speaks ... lol! Fun and entertaining ... just beware of the guy dressed up as a butler, he might just sneak up behind and tries to scare you ... hahaha!

Hurray! Hurray! Chipotle opened another location at 50 st/Park Avenue which is much nearer to my job ... woo hoo!!!! Thru Midtownlunch.com I found out they had opened on August 1, 2008 (Thank you Zach!) so yesterday Ms R and I made our way there for lunch. She got the burrito bowl while I had the burrito as usual. Well, being a new location, everything looked good ... clean and super friendly staff, lets hope they maintain it ... ha! Like what I always say, 'We shall see'. LOL!

I hardly eat at this deli but occasionally I would drop in to pick up drinks. They have a wide variety of hot food + salad buffet, sandwiches, drinks, snacks, etc. Counter staff are friendly, polite and they are open 24 hours 7 days a week.

Few days ago, I had gotten to the city early for work so I picked up a Ham & Cheese Croissant (I love Croissant!) Sandwich for breakfast and it tasted really good.

Yesterday I was very happy because I was awarded Employee of the Month (June 2008) at my job.

As it was recognition day, my manager had tricked me (she is a true trickster and got me good this time ... ha!) to go in a little earlier. As they were announcing the nominee names, I heard my name being mentioned and my heart was beating soooooooooo fast, when they called out my name as the winner, I almost wanted to cry and was in disbelief ... haha ... I know I know I am so drama but that was really how I felt at that moment ... hee hee. I was given a certificate, a badge, a pin and $75 Amex gift certificate ... WOO HOO!!! People have been coming up to congratulate me and it really felt so good ... heh heh.

Noodles ... yummmyyyyy! I luv noodles, I have them in soup or dry anytime (I see Ms Karen agreeing with me on that ... ha! Yes, we both luv our noodles). Yushi Bento Bar New York, my new found little Japanese eatery, clean, stylish decor, friendly service and fresh Japanese food and desserts, I totally dig this place now. I enjoyed the Yushi’s Greatest Hits which is a combination bento box of tuna and salmon sushi, tuna, salmon, and crab maki and salmon sashimi at $12.95. After reading about the Peking Duck Maki Roll - $4.95 from Midtownlunch.com, being a big fan of Peking duck, I just had to try, it was interesting, the filling was Peking duck with scallions and cucumber, not much taste but it goes well with the Yushi Hoisin Sauce, I find that very creative. I liked the refreshing fruit tea and also the Japanese Green Tea Pannacotta which comes in cute little shot glasses at $1.95. The tea was sugarfree and the pannacotta was not sweet which is the way I like.

As for the Ground Beef in Spaghetti Sauce and also Ground Beef in Baked Beans, they are made for our convenience for other nights since we are working the next 5 days.

After sampling one of my friends' Pad Thai from China Moon, I felt it tasted not bad compared to the Chinese food I had before which I didn't like at all, so for dinner I went to pick up the Pad Kee Mao - $.8.95 ($9.70 with tax) which is sauteed flat rice noodles with onions, fresh basil, chilli past and eggs. It tasted pretty good but it was a little too oily, the spiciness gave my tastebuds a big kick which was cool ... I mean HOT! ... Hahahaha! After a few mouthfuls, I felt it tasted like the Singapore Char Kway Teow minus the Si Hum aka Cockles ... hehehe! Think I will go back and try the other Thai dishes, definitely no more Chinese dishes from them.

Today I had the Lunch Special - Green Curry Pork - $7.25 ($7.86 with tax) which consisted of coconut milk, green curry, bamboo shoots, eggplant, basil and pepper. A little diluted but very tasty.

Update 8/9/2008
Had the Pad Thai with shrimp which is a famous thai noodle sauteed with egg scallions, dried beancurd bean sprouts and crushed peanuts. On the side I ordered a Tom Yum Goong, a spicy shrimp soup with mushroom and Thai herb and it was quite disappointing cos it tasted like sour soup filled with mushroom and shrimp, it was not spicy at all.

For lunch, I had wanted to go to Qdoba today but my friend wanted to go to Yummy Sushi in Rockefellar so I went along and got my food from there too. I had the Triple Spicy (Tuna, Salmon, Yellow Tail) - $8.95 and Garden Fresh Salad - $3.50 which was cheap and so good with the Ginger Dressing. I am glad I gave them a 2nd chance which means I will be back again ... heh heh.

My Cooking - Steak with Potato Gratin aka Scalloped Potatoes and Mixed Vegetables

Today being adventurous, I did my 1st attempt at making Potato Gratin aka Scalloped Potato, I think I probably added a little too much milk but it turned out really good. I peeled the skin of the potatoes then sliced and boiled them till tender and laid them in a small baking tray. For the mixture, bring the milk, shredded cheese, chopped onions and seasonings mixture to boil and pour over the potatoes before putting in the oven to bake for about 30 mins (shorter time needed since the potatoes were already cooked). When done, take the tray out and spread more shredded cheese over the top, bake for another 5 minutes till the cheese melts and is ready to be served.

I served the potato gratin with steak and mixed vegetables which made the hubby super duper happy since we haven't had steak for awhile. He tried the potato gratin and said it tasted really good, I am glad he enjoyed dinner.

Been awhile since I made a breakfast wrap for the hubby, since there was no green pepper nor onions, I used only eggs and shredded cheese for the omelette then wrapped it in a tortilla. Added the smiley face with ketchup, that definitely put on a big smile on the hubby's face, he said the egg looked crazy ... hahaha!

Today being my off-day, I decided to cook something different, we had homemade burrito. In the ground meat I added black beans, chopped onions, garlic, diced tomatoes and chopped green pepper, for seasonings I used Adobo, Sazon and pepper. The meat was wrapped in the tortilla with chopped lettuce, sour cream and shredded cheese, so yummers! The hubby said he says it's delicious and he likes it alot.

Last week my friends and I went to Chuck E Cheese to celebrate our buddy, Anthony's birthday. We were like a bunch of kids and had a really fun time eating pizza and playing games.

Was hanging out in Times Square after work and decided to visit the much talked about Junior's which is famous for their cheesecakes. I picked up the Strawberry Cheesecake, a chocolate cookie (for hubby to take to work as snack ... heh heh) and a Sugar Free Low Carb Plain for myself but I find it overpriced cos it cost me $6.50 for a tiny slice! The service was cool, easy location so I am not gonna complain too much. LOL!

I used to pay between USD$4 to USD$4.50 for the chicken over rice in midtown, I couldn’t believe it when they they charged me USD$6 recently, even the portions have shrunken ... WTF right! I know prices of food has been on the rise but a price hike of almost $2 is absolutely sickening! Bunch of crooks!

When the hubby and I was downtown last week, I still see the halal carts there selling their chicken over rice for $4.75.

We were out celebrating a co-worker’s birthday at South Street Seaport and while waiting for the rest of the gang to finish work, we stopped by Ruben’s Empanadas for a snack. The baked empanadas were very good and tasty, so many choices. The small little café is neat and cosy, definitely a nice hangout place.

This place is jammed packed even on a weekday! We waited 2 hours before we were able to get a table. Loud music, birthday song played every 5 seconds … ARGH! The server we had was totally an imbecile. However the good thing about this place is their food and drinks are so good! I enjoyed the Pernil (roast pork) very much, it was so big that I had to take the leftovers home. The Sangria and Pina Colada were really good too! … YUMMERS!

Was there on Memorial Day with a few friends, we totally enjoyed ourselves with the very BIG (with a 2nd shot of liquor in a tube) drinks e.g. margaritas, pina coladas, etc. The ribs, chicken, pulled pork were so yummy.

Later on about a few weeks later, I went back to takeout ribs and chicken for the hubby and myself after work.

It was my first time at Carmine's and I sure was shocked by how big the dishes were, they feed at least 3 to 4 people. Food was really good and our server name Vanessa was so sweet and nice! My friend and I shared a salad and meatball pasta there and we each got to take home the leftovers! If you wanna try more dishes, have more friends go with you so you get to try more dishes ... BURP!

This is the 5th Avenue location between 48st & 49st. A typical chain restaurant, nothing fancy, due to the locality it's full of tourist. TGI Friday's is overpriced, food is so-so, service was okay. The happy hour is only valid at the bar counter, how fair is that. The chicken fingers I had was nothing special and not worth the %15.99 and the margarita was below average. It would be most likely my 1st and my last visit.

So simple to cook and so yummy, hubby and I totally enjoyed our dinner. One thing missing is shredded cheese cos we were too tired to get it after work.

I had cooked the chilli 2 days back and we had it with rice, there were alot of leftovers so for a change we had it with nachos tonite, it was so good and yummy!

Chilli consisted of Baked beans, ground beef, chopped garlic and onions, dash of adobo and pepper. :o)

My new found fave lunch spot in midtown is Qdoba Mexican Grill located on 46st between Madison and 5th Avenue. Place is clean and neat, great serving staff who are friendly and polite, they have a wide selection menu and their food is pure addiction ... ha! Everything taste so good!

Remember to ask for the Qdoba Card, the more you eat the more you earn. It is a reward program . The last time I went to Kashmir, they still had the All-You-Can-Eat Pakistani/Indian buffet which was so good and cheap but now they stopped and instead they serve have the buffet by weight which is still cheap at $4.99 per pound. Last week I went there after work and bought some chicken, kebab and vegetable, went home, made some brown rice and packed lunch enough for 3 days, they were super delicious, think I be going back again soon! YUM!

What will they come up next! My friends and I personally think they should be given out free ... hee hee. Brown Rice not only taste good (at least to me) but it's healthy too. I have attempted to cook brown rice for many times but never successful probably because the water measurement was not right. However, I tried to make it again last 2 days and I finally made it right! YAY!

Since I know the family will not like brown rice, I use them only for my packed lunches.

Curry Chicken! Mmmmmmmm ... so yummy!

Since I was off from work the past 2 days, I stayed home to rest because my feet has been hurting due to the fact that being in retail, my job requires me to stand and walk around, no sitting down except during our breaks.

Oh well, back to my favorite topic which is food, I decided to make Curry Chicken with the ready-made curry pastes Mom got me from Singapore, all I had to do was add coconut milk and the chicken, really easy and taste so good! I have 3 packed lunches in the freezer now so all I need to do is grab and go!

Surprisingly when I was cooking, the spiciness didn't get to the Hubby, he didn't run to the room to take cover like the last time when I made the curry beef, in fact he said the curry smell really good but of course he don't dare to try lah ... hahaha!

Whilst at Trader Joe's, they were doing the usual food sampling and they were serving the Cod Sticks with Tartar Sauce which tasted really good. After picking up 2 boxes of the Cod Sticks, I also got 2 boxes of Hash Browns and used them for dinner on Wednesday night, simple, easy and convenient dinner ... yummy!
